Afro-Latin@ Shorts- Film Program

The AfroLatin@ Forum will screen a series of short films representing various perspectives on Afro-Descendants across Latin America, Central America, and the Caribbean. These films span a variety of themes and topics but are united in highlighting and celebrating aspects of Afro-Latin@ history, culture(s), and tradition(s). Additionally, many of the films are focused on the most important social and political justice issues affecting Afro-Latin@s today.

This event is part of the programming for our upcoming Afro-Latin@s Now! Race Counts conference.

Films to be screened:

1.Eu Tenho a Palavra / I Have The Word by Lilian Santiago, 26 min, Portuguese w/English Subtitles, Brazil  – The “language of the Black Coast” is a dialect that was created on plantations in Brazil by enslaved Africans. Incredibly the language is still spoken today in Minas Gerais, Brazil, having been passed through many generations.

2.Choco Jungle Project by Mathew Mulholland, 4 min, Spanish w/English Subtitles, Colombia – An interview excerpt from the forthcoming Choco Jungle Project documentary. Rita Bermudez discusses the dying art form of Alabados (singing for the deceased) in the Colombian town of El Valle, Choco.

3.Birthright Crisis by Miriam Neptune, 15 min, Spanish w/English Subtitles, Haiti/DR – People of Haitian descent are systematically denied citizenship rights in the Dominican Republic. This video is about the Haitian-Dominican community’s resistance in the face of illegal deportations, scapegoating, and exclusion.

4.Nosotros AfroPeruanos by Gabriela Watson, 5 min, Spanish w/English Subtitles, Peru – The documentary covers the culture and the reality of the black population in Peru, through interviews with social activists, teachers, artists, researchers and residents of Chincha, El Carmen and El Guayabo cities marked by the large presence of African descent.

5.Mujer Afro/Mulher Afro/AfroDescendant Woman, 5 min, English & Spanish w/English subtitles, The Americas – This short examines the unique experiences of Afrodescendant women in the Americas. Intersections of race, color, class and sexuality is explored.

6.Bocas de Ceniza /Mouths of Ash by Juan Manuel Echavarria, 19 min, Spanish w/English Subtitles, Colombia – In a series of videos, Echavarria shows the faces of people who are directly affected by or who have survived the massacres of the paramilitary forces and guerrilla warfare. Seven singers transform their pain into song after having been witnesses or surviving massacres in Colombia.

7.I am Garifuna by Milton Guity, 5 min, Honduras/Central – This documentary follows the journey of Milton Guity, Jr. as he travels to Honduras to experience life as a Garifuna and rediscover his roots.

8.Peru es Diversidad Ad, 3 min, Spanish, Peru – With support from the World Bank, the Ministry of Culture brings you, “We are AfroPeruvians and we are not invisible. We Count!”

Each film will be introduced by a moderator and the event will conclude with an audience Q & A.
