Shifting the Geography of Reason XVI: Resistance, Reparation, Renewal

Caribbean philosophy arose out of the crucible of colonialism, racism, and slavery. As such, it has never skirted social and political questions, whether practical or theoretical, about the nature of the modern Caribbean, the relationship between the Caribbean and the wider world, dynamics of global capitalism, commitments of justice, and how agents who have been subject to domination and arbitrary interference respond to their condition in order to create visions of alternative futures.
Founded in 2003 in Mona, Jamaica, the principal goal of the Caribbean Philosophical Association is to support the free exchange of ideas and foster an intellectual community that is truly representative of the diversity of voices and perspectives that is paradigmatic of, but not limited to, the Caribbean. The Caribbean is thus understood not solely as a geopolitical region, but also as a trope to investigate dimensions of the multiple undersides of modernity. Likewise, philosophy is conceived, not as an isolated academic discipline, but instead as rigorous theoretical reflection about fundamental problems faced by humanity. Understood in this way, Caribbean philosophy is a transdisciplinary form of interrogation aiming to elucidate fundamental questions that emerge with discovery, conquest, racial, gender, and sexual domination, genocide, dependency, and exploitation as well as freedom, emancipation, and decolonization.
What is resistance and what are its forms? How are we to understand reparation? What is the relationship between reparation and compensatory justice? How are we to conceive of renewal in challenging times?
We strongly encourage proposals that explore these and related questions pertaining to the conference theme, and we invite, as always, individual and panel proposals that otherwise reflect our commitment to “shift the geography of reason.”
