Assistant Professor in African American Studies

City Tech invites applications for a tenure-track position in African American Studies at the Assistant Professor rank, to begin during the 2019-2020 academic year. The African American Studies Department is designed to bring into disciplinary focus, through inter-departmental and multicultural course offerings in Liberal Arts and Sciences, the history and culture of Africans and their descendants, throughout the diaspora from antiquity to the present.

The position requires a commitment to teaching, scholarly research resulting in publications and presentations, sustained service to the department and college, and academic advisement. The faculty member will be expected to actively participate in College and University-wide initiatives and function collaboratively in department level efforts, including involvement in the creation, development, and assessment of department curricula. The faculty member will also be required to prepare and deliver instruction for undergraduate intermediate-level courses, such as Early Black Writers, Contemporary Black Writers, Black Women in Literature, Early African Literature, and/or Modern African Literature. The department also expects the successful candidate to employ interactive instructional models as well as digital tools.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ph.D. in hand at time of appointment, in African American Studies, Literature, and/or other related fields. The department seeks candidates with teaching and research experience in African American and/or African literature at the college level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess an interdisciplinary approach to instruction and research interests in North America and/or on the continent of Africa.
  • Demonstrated potential for or evidence of scholarly leadership.
  • Projects that contribute to the breadth and depth of the discipline.
