The Faculty of Liberal and Fine Arts is pleased to invite applications for the position of tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor, Spanish at the Oakes Field Campus of the University of The Bahamas located in New Providence (Nassau) and at UB-North located in Grand Bahama. This full-time appointment will begin 1 August 2019.
The Foreign Languages Department is seeking candidates with the ability to teach all levels of the Spanish language and culture courses. The ability to teach another language is also desirable (Portuguese, French or Haitian Creole). Candidates who have the ability to teach and develop courses in language for the professions (i.e. Medical Spanish, Legal and Law Enforcement Spanish, Business Spanish, Spanish for Tourism, etc.) and/or experience in translation and interpretation are encouraged to apply. Applicants must possess an earned PhD in Spanish, Hispanic/Latin American/Spanish Studies, or a related field from an accredited institution. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching undergraduate students; evidence of excellence in teaching and in the use of creative/innovative pedagogies; knowledge of current trends in pedagogy; skills in course development and implementation; evidence of research and scholarship. Applicants must possess an earned PhD in Spanish, Hispanic/Latin American/Spanish Studies, Pedagogy (FLE) or Second Language Acquisition (Spanish), Translation and Interpretation studies, or a related field from an accredited institution.
Responsibilities. Teach all levels of the Spanish language; teach and develop (depending on the expertise) Spanish courses for the professions and specialization tracks in translation and interpretation; engage in research; assist in securing external grants and other funding opportunities; participate in curriculum review, revision and design; develop and participate in departmental projects; contribute to the development of teaching materials; serve on departmental, school and university-wide committees.
Qualifications. Candidates must have an earned PhD in Spanish, Hispanic/Latin American/Spanish Studies, Pedagogy (FLE) or Second Language Acquisition (Spanish) from an accredited institution; native or near-native command of both English and Spanish (oral and written); excellent undergraduate teaching experience; and an active research agenda. Desirable attribute: the ability to teach another language (Portuguese, French, or Haitian Creole).
Setting. University of The Bahamas (UB) is a vital catalyst for national development. Chartered on 10th November 2016, UB had its genesis in The College of The Bahamas which was established in 1974. Since 1995, the institution’s academic offerings have expanded through the introduction of baccalaureate degree programmes offered across a broad range of approximately 60 majors. Master’s degree programmes have included an MBA and an MSc in Reading and Inclusive Education as well as graduate degree programmes offered in collaboration with various US universities. UB operates from the Oakes Field Campus and the Grosvenor Close Centre in New Providence; UB-North in Grand Bahama; and the Gerace Research Facility in San Salvador.
